Ever since AT&T changed their data plans from unlimited to 2GB/month and now the 4GB/month limits, people have been doing anything they can to watch their data plan. I have even gone as far as not upgrading my phone and buying it outright so that I don’t have to update to the limited plan. Staying on WiFi whenever possible or watching Netflix. One thing is for sure, when it’s limited, that data dwindles down fast.
Onavo is a utility mainly for travelers but anyone can use it. This app configures your device to use their data cloud service and drastically lowers the amount of data used by the device.
The user can customize the app to compress different forms of data. Savings can be turned on and off, the user can compress emails to save data, and even change the image quality. In the past 14 hours, I have saved 13MB of data.
In the session details section of the app the user gets an App Savings Breakdown, all of the applications used are listed and the data saved and percentage are listed with them.
While Onavo is optimized for travelers, and produces its best results for those apps which you use abroad, it can definitely help you squeeze more out of your data plan at home, and maybe even switch to a cheaper one.
While Onavo doesn’t yet support streaming apps like youtube or skype, it does support all download data. Onavo helps the user save up to 80% of their data without changing the way they use their phone.
The best way for someone to judge whether this app is worth getting or not is to simply download it and give it a try. The savings are remarkable. Why wait, save some money, buy more apps that use data and save on that data as well!
