In addition to the high quality images the Canon 70D is able to take, you are also provided image management and editing tools directly in-camera for added convenience and flexibility. Let’s go over the adjustments available for image and video files on the Canon 70D:
- To view images and videos taken with the camera, press the Playback button to the right of the LCD monitor on the back of the camera. To scroll through the images, press left or right on the multi-controller, scrolling with the Quick Control Dial, or swiping left and right on the touchscreen. The main dial by default will skip forward or back 10 images to quickly move through a set.
- In image playback mode, the AE Lock and AF Point Selection buttons at the top right corner of the back of the camera can be used to zoom in and out of an image, and to increase or decrease the number of preview images on the screen. Pinching in and out on the touchscreen also provides the same functionality.
- When previewing a single image or video, pressing the Quick Settings button to the right of the LCD monitor will reveal options for many of the image adjustments available:
- On the top left, enabling Protect Images will prevent the image from being deleted accidentally.
- Rotate Image gives the option to rotate the image to the left or right.
- Rating can be set to off, or to rate the image anywhere from 1 to 5 stars. This is a useful feature when sorting through images and finding your favorites later.
- Creative Filters lets use choose from one of the Creative Filters, such as Grainy B/W, Fish-eye effect, Miniature effect and more.
- On the right side, the first selection is the return arrow that will step out of the quick settings menu and return to image preview.
- Highlight Alert can be enabled to highlight in the image any sections that are overexposed or ‘blown out’. These sections of the photo will flash black.
- AF Point Display shows the point where Autofocus was used on the image to show where the image is focused to.
- Below this, we find the option to set how the main dial functions during image preview. This can be set to scroll through one image at a time, ten images, one hundred images, jump by date, by folder, movies only, photos only, or by rating.
- When Wi-Fi is enabled, the last option provides a shortcut to Wi-Fi functions.
Additional adjustment options are available on images taken in RAW format. To access RAW image adjustments:
- Select an image taken in RAW format (you can see whether an image is in RAW by pressing the Info button until image file info is shown, where you will see RAW in the lower left corner), then press the Menu button and navigate to the seventh settings tab (The first tab with the playback icon), then select RAW Image Processing.
- You will see the image selected, as well as information about the file.
- Press the SET button to access RAW file adjustments.
- Certain settings will be disabled based on the camera settings selected when the shot was taken.
- Brightness can be adjusted by 1/3 steps a full stop in either direction.
- Color Space can be switched between sRGB and Adobe RGB.
- If Auto White Balance was not used for the photo, White balance can be set to any white balance preset. Selecting the K option gives the option to select the specific color temperature, adjusted using the Main Dial.
- Peripheral Illumination Correction is an option that will correct the illumination around the edges of the image based on the lens used. Many Canon EF lenses are supported with this option.
- One of the preset Picture Styles can be selected to apply various image exposure and color adjustments. See our Changing Picture Styles on Canon 70D article for more information.
- Distortion Correction corrects distortion caused by the lens used for the photo.
- Auto Lighting Optimizer can be switched between the four options available in the Auto Lighting Optimizer option in the third tab of the settings menu. Auto Lighting Optimizer automatically adjusts images to correct for optimal contrast and brightness.
- Chromatic Aberration Correction can be enabled or disabled, and will correct color fringing around the edges of your subject. This is generally only useful for use with Canon lenses.
- High ISO Noise Correction can be enabled or disabled to reduce image noise when a high ISO speed was used when the photo was taken.
- Save will save the adjustments made to the photo using the above settings.
- Image Quality can be adjusted to save the image at a lower resolution than the original image quality setting.
