How to Update Firmware on Canon 70D

Complex and complicated devices sometimes means there are some bugs and inconsistencies in the software used in that device. Luckily for us, software is simply digital bits, and can be updated to provide bug fixes and even added features. Here’s how to update the firmware on your Canon 70D:

  1. Check the current firmware version of your camera by navigating to the last wrench tab in the settings menu, and either copy down or remember the firmware version number at the bottom of the list.
  2. Find out if this version is the latest version available by opening the Support & Drivers page of Canon’s website on your computer:
    1. Find and click on EOS 70D in the drill down menu.
    2. Expand the Firmware section of Drivers & Software menu of the page.
  3. Find the latest firmware version and click to download.
    1. Often there will be no firmware updates. In this case, you are up to date.
  4. Move the downloaded ZIP file to an SD card using an SD card reader.
  5. Insert the SD card into your camera.
  6. Return to the last wrench tab in the settings menu of the camera, then tap on Firmware version to begin the process of updating your camera to the latest firmware version. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
